Another Plug for October

October 14th is the Sweetest Day. Not as magnificent as the fact that it is National Doughnut Month, but pretty cool, none-the-less.

"Everyone who loves candy should make it party of his general food consumption.--Let candy be made part of the meal. Let it be taken immediately at the close of the meal as a part of the dessert. Then it does you no harm." (click on picture for full article)

Seems that the Sweetest Day of the Year came into being in 1921 when a candy company employee helped deliver sweets to orphans, shut-ins and other down-on-their-luck folk. It devolved, as so many things do, into a day to buy a box of candy for the person who will be most annoyed if you don't and was later also advertised, more honestly, as Candy Day. But then, tell me who doesn't need a Candy Day?

Go Rent This

An excerpt from a review of Whit Stillman's Barcelona (oh, when will that man make another movie!):

Throughout the film, Stillman keeps the words crisp and believable, using the technique to render the characters more endearing, as with Fred’s consternation over literary undertones:

Fred: Since I’ve been waiting for the fleet to show up, I’ve read a lot, and one of the things that keeps popping up is this about “subtext” … plays, novels, songs, they all have a “sub-text,” which I take to mean a hidden message or import of some kind. So, sub-text, we know, but what do you call the message or meaning that’s right there on the surface, completely open and obvious? They never talk about that. What do you call what’s above the subtext?

Ted: [bewildered] The text.

Fred: Okay, that’s right, but they never talk about that.

Missing

A favorite blog today made mention of this album (no embed allowed).

Which reminded me yet again I have to get New Miserable Experience in a more updated format than a cassette tape. Back in the day, it and Weezer's Blue Album were top companions for driving long distances. Unless it was a rainy sad gray day, then it was August and Everything After. How could it be anything else? But I'll leave you with Weezer for a sunny day. Even better, a Weezer tribute band:
