Infringement?

I make these:

But I did not make this:

A crafty copy-cat? Or did we both tap into a familiar look? I get first dibs though! This graffiti artist didn't start decorating Alberta Street until a few weeks ago, whereas my project is months old. So there.

Women's Work

I found these workbooks from the early 80's at my present job. They were exercises for students nearing high school graduation to help them think through their next steps. The students were supposed to read the story and then reflect on their own lives, writing out key pieces of the plot using the new 'power words' they'd learned, and then reflecting on what they think they'd do.

Jean's plight caught my eye. Along with her raging cool corduroy coat and that neat little neck bow. The workbook is titled The Last Goodbye, part of the Breaking Away series. Cue the swelling strings.

i officially want to have lunch with jack white. i'll pick up the tab.

jack on god:
"--I'm not looking for so-and-so's opinion, not even my own opinion. I just want to know what the truth is. I mean that's what I'm looking for. In my opinion, there's no way God looks at things from 14 different angles. I see God as knowing only one truth, and that's it. There's no other opinion about it.

And I want to know what that one truth is. Everyone can sit around and have their manly and earthly opinions about things, but I doubt there's much debate going on in heaven. I'm trying to find whatever that singular truth is in any particular topic.

It's interesting because as humans we're so stupid, there's no way we can figure out most of these things."

jack on stars making statements:
"I've formed opinions from very small amounts of information. Sure, I'm against the war, but if I write a song about it, can I back it up?

If we sat here and talked about it, maybe I wouldn't have the figures in my head or knowledge of what battles are going on to fully defend my position. I can say in general, 'Yes, I'm against it.' but I don't think I'm a person who knows enough to preach it."

Actually, more than one or two excellent interviews/commentaries
in this issue about artists and the larger meaning that drives them.

a p.s. picture:

After finding this picture, I am unsure what
strand I'd want the conversation to follow.
His t-shirt says Blind Willie McTell. Good,
good man for getting the word out.
I'm legally bound (I think) to say that the picture
is copyrighted by Tim Hayes at
Falloutrecords.com.
I inadvertantly got rid of that information
when I cropped the picture.

Work Without Hope

I am often reminded that the French word for work is travailler, the Anglo-French source for the English travail. Which is what work can be for a lot of us.

I am in the midst of seeking other employment. I have a job (whew) but the dead-end is fast approaching.

It's a lot of work, this rattling around for employment to satisfy all my aims and aesthetics. It's good to know I'm not the only one searching for meaning in my 40 hrs of servitude.
